Goodbye Reddit

Reddit (like every centralized social media platform) has decided to become actively hostile towards its users. Its web interface and official app have been subpar for a long time, but users could rely on amazing third-party apps like RedReader or Apollo. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case.

As part of its IPO preparations, Reddit has decided to charge for API access. For more details, you can refer to Apollo’s author post. In short, they seem to have taken a page out of Twitter’s book.

This situation is unfortunate because Reddit used to be one of the best places to find information across the web. The quality of Google search results has been rapidly deteriorating, and the common advice was to add site:reddit.com to your Google searches.

Since Reddit is now virtually unusable without third-party clients, I have decided to remove my account. I encourage you to do the same. It’s a four-step process:

  1. Grab copy of your data.
  2. Wait for private message from Reddit with your data dump.
  3. Delete all your posts and comments using this tool.
  4. Go to profile and delete your account.

Update: Reddit restores content scrubbed this way. Oh well.
